Welcome to 5th Grade Music at TIS!

Please subscribe to my Edlio page to get updates for TIS 5th grade Music classes.

I'm so excited to meet all of our new 5th graders!

The students will have so much FUN and learn amazing music skills in our classes together!

Be sure to check out the Welcome Video to meet Mrs. Brownfield and other great resources below!

Here are some important facts for you to know about 5th Grade Music this year:

CLASS ROTATION: Please see the Class Rotation Roster attached to this page below.  Students will come to music ONE DAY per week, according to the letter that is assigned to their specials class rotation.  The other days they will either have an art class or 3 days of PE for that period.

Be sure they know which class period of the day is their specials rotation, as well!

We suggest printing out your child's schedule and the specials rotation attachment to help them the first week of school.

GRADING GUIDELINES: This is a participation based class.  They will recieve a specials letter of either E (Excellent), S (Satisfactory), N (Needs Improvement), or U (Unsatisfactory) as their grade.

As long as they are participating to the best of their ability in each class, they will receive an E for the class.  It is not based on talent, but rather on their willingness to try new things!  If a child is simply not participating or actively doing their work given, they will be given a warning to get back on the task at hand.  If they have to be given 2 warnings in a class, their daily grade for that day will go down to an S.  If they have to be given 4 warnings, they will be given an N and the parent will be notified of their child's unwillingness to do their activity or assignement.  If this behavior persists after over several lessons, then a parent meeting will be held to see how we can best help the student in the class before they recieve a U.

SUPPLIES - MUSIC JOURNALS:  Each child will keep a music journal of what they did each week in music.  It can be something they enter online in our Schoology music class in the "Music Journal" assignment link provided or in a personal spiral or small notebook kept just for music.  It can also be simply a section in a binder that has blank music pages they can fill in. Each entry should be about 3-5 sentences at the minimum for the week. More instructions will be given in class about how students will use this journal.

ACTIVITIES: We do all kinds of fun and exciting things in music!  We will be experimenting with all kinds of instruments and singing techniques and styles, as well as learning the basics of music reading and music notation, as well as doing fun activities involving music such as movement, listening games and more!  Each class will have a variety of fun things for them to experience!  It's always a GREAT time in music class with lots of laughter and learning made FUN!

VIRTUAL STUDENTS/ONLINE LESSONS:  Online students will be given an ASYNCHRONOUS lesson to do on their own each week.  The lesson will have several choices for them to do.  Some choices will be mandatory for them to complete during the week and some will be extra fun things they can do if they choose to explore the "choice boards" in music.  They will have an entire week to complete the music lessons and turn in their responses.  If for some reason, there are computer glitches and the child cannot access the materials online for any reason or if your internet is not working properly, you can simply have the student take a "music break" and take a relaxing break listening to their favorite music.  They can simply write in their music journal what they listened to and how it made them feel or if they did something while listening to the music, like dancing or relaxing while laying on the floor and just resting their eyes and focusing on their breathing as a "brain break".  Music can be an amazing part of each child's day to help them take a break from the online work and move around or stretch or relax their eyes from screen time.  But it is important that they do the required work assigned in schoology each week to the best of their abilities.

Please keep in mind the following information:  Mrs. Brownfield teaches EVERY 5th grader in TIS for music, which is about 400 5th grade students.  It may take several days for her to respond to questions or problems that you may be having due to the large load of students in 5th grade.  Virtual students will not have any live teaching from Mrs. Brownfield.  Everything they will need to do will be in their Schoology lessons with guidance videos to help them.

If you have an important question that needs a response quickly, you can leave a message on the music office phone at 281-357-3150 ext 4350 and every effort will be given to respond quickly.  Mrs. Brownfield is also the 6th grade Choir Teacher, so be sure to include the full name of your child, grade, specials letter and class period they come to specials for her to better find your student's information quickly.

Musically yours,

Mrs. Patti Brownfield  :)

How to read the 5th Grade rotation schedule:

Use your “Specials Letter” to determine your weekly schedule using the chart above.

Be sure to note which class period they go to specials, as well.

They will follow this schedule for the full year.

Be careful to note that there are 2 different Art teachers/Art rooms. Pay close attention to which Art teacher you are assigned to in your schedule to know which room is your art room for the year.  Their classrooms are clearly marked with their names outside their classrooms.

The Music room is located in the back of the TIS campus in a separate music building.  Music students will enter through the  double grey doors.  (The room number is 400.)  Mrs. Brownfield is the music teacher for all 5th grade students.

PE will be held in the gym and taught by the two PE teachers, Coach Skinner and Coach Taylor.  You will need to wear your PE shoes and dress accordingly for your PE days.  The coaches will inform you of what to wear the first day of PE.

You may want to hang this in your home by your family calendar to help remind students of when to wear PE shoes.
