 Tested TEKS for Unit 3:

6.5(A) know that an element is a pure substance represented by a chemical symbol and that a compound is a pure substance represented by a chemical formula

6.5(C) identify the formation of a new substance by using the evidence of a possible chemical change such as the production of gas, change in temperature, production of a precipitate, or color change.

I hope students have had a restful and fun extra few days.  This is the list of upcoming events.  Please make sure that if a student was absent on Friday, that they come in the morning to make-up the quiz we had on Friday.  Students need to be studying for his or her Unit 3 test.  Valuable study tools are found in Google Classroom for the unit.

Information to help students study:

Unit 3 Vocabulary:  chemical changes, physical changes, precipitate, atom, molecule, substance, element, compound, chemical reaction, temperature, chemical formula

Tested TEKS for Unit 3:

6.5(A) know that an element is a pure substance represented by a chemical symbol and that a compound is a pure substance represented by a chemical formula  

Ex:  Iron is found on the periodic table and is a pure substance represented by the symbol, Fe.

Ex: H20 is made up of 2 pure substances.  The two pure substances or elements are Hydrogen and Oxygen.  H20 is represented by the chemical formula.

6.5(C) identify the formation of a new substance by using the evidence of a possible chemical change such as the production of gas, change in temperature, production of a precipitate, or color change.

Ex: A chemical change occurs when a new substance has been formed.  It is evident by CHOPG. C=color change, H=heat produced (temperature change), O= odor produced, P=precipitate, G=gas produced

Ex: A physical change occurs when a physical change has taken place, but NO new substance is formed. (paper tearing, ice melting, breaking something in two pieces, etc.)

Given a mass of 100 grams and a volume of 20 mL, solve for density.

Density = mass/volume

Density = 100g/20mL

Density=5 g/mL

Friday- Analyzing our Unit 3 Exam, corrections, and identifying goals (strengths/weaknesses), identifying how we can grow academically from our data.

 

Test Friday, September 27th

I wanted to reach out to you regarding our unit 2 exam over physical properties being moved from October 3rd to September 27th.  The district has made some changes to the curriculum and split up unit 2 and 3 which is why it is in the student's best interest to move up the testing date.  Please make sure that your child is studying his or her INB and using Google Classroom resources to prepare for our test.  Also, please make sure you are checking Home Access Center for grades.  If you are unable to log in, please contact Karen Burns, our registrar. Students must log in to Google Classroom with their school account.  I have posted a video of how to access the Google Classroom in case you need assistance.  If you have accepted an invite to Google Classroom as a parent, you must sign in using your child's school account.

Week of 9/16-9/20

Focus of the week:  Density 

6.6(B) calculate density to identify an unknown substance

We have been working on how to measure the volume and mass of objects.  Students need to be able to make the connection that mass has to do with measuring using a triple beam balance with the unit of grams. Students need to know how to calculate the mass reading a triple beam balance.
 
Volume is measured using water displacement with a graduated cylinder and is represented by the unit mL  In order to find the volume, students must do the following: 
1. measure the volume of the liquid in a graduated cylinder
2. drop the object that is needing to be measured into the graduated cylinder
3. measure the volume of the liquid after dropping in the object
4. subtract the volume of the two graduated cylinders--this will show how much water was displaced (volume of the object)
 
This week we will make the connection that if mass>volume, the object sinks; if mass<volume, the object floats.  Students will need to use the terms more dense (sink) or less dense (float) than water.
 
We will also begin calculating density using the formula: 
density = mass/volume
 
Students will have homework each night this week to help practice density.
Students will need to study each night the material from class and will have at least 1 problem to reinforce density if they do not finish in class.
 
Friday is our quiz over density.
