Science Scope & Sequence
Here is where you will find information about the science concepts we are working on this year. There will be links, files, and picture examples for the students and parents to use on the Science Google Classroom.
For the first nine weeks, we will focus on the following:
We will be setting up our Science INB and Weather Calendar to use for the year.
NATURE OF SCIENCE/ SAFETY
We will be going over the classroom policies/procedures and safety contract that all parents and students will need to sign. We will also be working on identifying different science tools and how to use them properly as well as identify what they are used for. We will take a Science Tools and Safety Test. This is a topic that will be used all year long, so we will only be focusing on safety introductions.
MATTER AND PHYSICAL PROPERTY
This unit focuses on using measurable physical properties to classify matter. The students will also identify different mixtures and solutions in order to differentiate between mixtures and solutions
THERMAL AND LIGHT ENERGY
This unit focuses on the uses of thermal energy and how it can change matter. We will also look at the uses of light energy and how it interacts with different media.
For the second nine weeks, we will be focusing on the following:
ELECTRICAL AND SOUND ENERGY
This unit focuses on the use of electrical and sound energy. Electrical energy travels in closed systems as electrical currents. Sound energy travels in waves and interacts differently with various types of media.
FORCE AND MOTION
This unit focuses on the uses of mechanical energy through student experimental design focusing on force and motion.
CHANGES TO THE SURFACE OF THE EARTH
This unit focuses on the HOW wind, water, and ice change landforms and the surface of the Earth.
FORMATION OF SEDIMENTARY ROCKS
This unit focuses on the process in which sedimentary rocks are formed.
For the third nine weeks, we will be focusing on the following:
FORMATION OF FOSSIL FUELS
This unit focuses on looking at how fossil fuels are formed.
INTERACTIONS BETWEEN THE SUN, EARTH, AND MOON
This unit focuses on the relationship between the Sun, Earth, and Moon. We will also look at how the energy from the Sun interacts with the oceans to drive the water cycle.
ADAPTATIONS AND TRAITS
This unit focuses on how structures of organisms perform specific functions that allow the organism to survive in specific ecosystems. We will also look at the differences between inherited and learned traits in organisms.
For the fourth nine weeks, we will be focusing on the following:
CYCLES IN ECOSYSTEMS
This unit focuses on the interactions between living and nonliving parts of ecosystems through the flow of energy in food webs, cycles, symbiotic relationships between organisms, and the various life cycles of organisms.
INTERACTIONS IN FOREST AND GRASSLAND ECOSYSTEMS
This unit focuses on the specific interactions between living and nonliving things in temperate forest, tropical rainforests, and grasslands.
INTERACTIONS IN AQUATIC, ARCTIC, AND DESERT ECOSYSTEMS
This unit focuses on the specific interactions between living and nonliving things in aquatic, arctic, and desert environments.
This unit focuses on how fossil fuels can be used to determine the environments of the past.
This unit focuses on reviewing content for the Science STAAR.
PREP FOR 6TH GRADE
This unit focuses on preparing students for the upcoming year with force and motion.
